Sometimes it is scary to make a new step. Laura knows the feeling; she started a new chapter of her life just a few weeks ago. Since February Laura has been the new volunteer in Delavski dom Trbovlje. Laura is 29 years old and comes from Spain.
“My biggest fears before coming to Trbovlje were, that the work will not be right for me, that it will be too much or that I just will not fit into the workplace in general.” Her first days at work took her fears away. Another aspect that let her feel more comfortable was the fact that Trbovlje gave her a really familiar feeling. “The city has a lot in common with my hometown, especially the history of mining is similar to my town … it is good to have something familiar in a new place!”
For over a year Laura has searched for the right project which would fit her. “I did not want to do just any project; I wanted to have a project connected to my profession!” After finishing art studies, she also wanted to see how she could use her knowledge for practical purposes. Laura came to Slovenia with a lot of expectations and motivation. Especially the incentive live in another country for a longer time motivated her to leave Spain for a while: “When else do you have the chance to learn so much about a different culture and get in contact with other volunteers from all over the world?” Even if these months are something like a break for her, Laura’s main goal it’s to improve her professional skills by working at Delavski dom Trbovlje. “My initial experience working at Delavski dom Trbovlje was great, this is why I have a lot of hope and motivation for the next months!”
