Youth Center Trbovlje(MCT) is a local public body, established in 2001 by the Municipality of Trbovlje with the purpose of implementing and coordinating different activities for- and with young people, cooperating with other actors of the European youth sector, gathering and providing information for young people. We also offer our services to individuals as well as organizations and companies and carry out a wider range of activities by acquiring European funds.

MCT acts according to the law on public interest in the youth sector and follows the legal provisions of this law in the youth field. MCT works mostly at the local level, but in a small region like Zasavje, we connect and work regionally as well. Our vision is that MCT by 2020 will become a development and training center that creates the conditions for better standards for young people and the progress of the whole local community, and encourages young people to become socially responsible. Our vision is based on the belief that young people must become the key holders of development in the region.

Locally and regionally we work with many public institutions, organizations and societies, as we are recognized as a reliable and efficient partner. We also regularly participate in national projects and carry out a number of international activities. We have been carrying out international activities since 2005, and so far we have implemented more than 50 different projects in the framework of various national calls and tenders of European and other programs (hosting and sending seminars, trainings, study visits, youth exchanges, European voluntary service, mobilityprojects within the framework of the Lifelong Learning Program, mobility projects for youth workers, youth local and transnational initiatives, the Progress project, etc.).

In addition to the youth field, MCT runs a youth hostel and café since 2011 and in the period from 2012-2016 we implemented the activities of the tourist information center for the entire Zasavje Region. MCT has 5 full-time employees and 10 permanent employees, who are daily present in the MCT. The MCT building is located in the center of the city and it was built with the funds from the European Regional Development Fund. It has also become the focal point of the city’s events for all generations.

MCT’s human resources and technical capabilities make the organization strong enough to carry out major projects. The team consists of people from different fields (sociologists, political scientists, organizers of work) who have experience in planning, reporting, implementing and managing the content of projects, managing finance, evaluating and reporting in major projects.

This year, we’ve focused particularly on two topics. The first is closely connected with unemployment of young people, especially the long-term unemployment of young people, which sets Zasavje Region to the very top of our country. The problem is being addressed by the Ključ project (The Key) (link). The second topic is the theme of intercultural tolerance and coexistence. In this context, we carry out the Safe Haven project (link) that strengthens the competences of intercultural understanding and thus addresses the problem of xenophobia and intolerance, which is spreading extensively throughout Europe and around the world in the last few years.

Youth center is one of those few organizations that enable young people to learn from experience. If the school is a »theory«, the youth center is the »practice«, where young people gain competences, crucial for their personal and professional development, through experiential learning. Experimental learning happens in the form of interest groups, where young people realize their ideas under the mentorship of a youth worker.

»Every mistake can be a learning experience« is the principle of the learning process at our youth center. In this way, we want to encourage young people to understand that mistakes are always a component of the progress and therefore do not need to be seen as something negative.

In Youth center Trbovlje we don’t »count visitors«. Our mission is based on active participants, who change, co-create and leave their footprint in the organization with their ideas and actions. Youth center Trbovlje is a living »formation«, which is characterized by the activities of young groups of people who work in it. Therefore, our audience is our active young participants.

Youth exchange can also be called a »ticket« for the entrance into the international environment of youth work, since the vast majority of young people are acquainted with it through a youth exchange. The youth exchange is a project, planned by the young people with the help of youth worker and carried out in cooperation with peers from other European countries. In the week that they spend together, they address local social problems and solve them through different activities. A Youth exchange is an international learning experience that enabled the participants to acquire new knowledge and skills, noted in the final Youthpass certificate.

The European Voluntary Service (EVS) offers young people the option of a longer stay and work in a host organization in a foreign country (up to 12 months). The work of an EVS volunteer is for the benefit of a host organization or local community, but at the same time performing practical tasks presents challenges as well as the learning process for the volunteer.

The Youth Center Trbovlje is a coordinating organization. This means that we perform EVS projects together with several host organizations from the local community. In this way, we are expanding the opportunities for organizations in the region to upgrade their regular activity with the active involvement of EVS volunteers. EVS volunteers therefore acquire an important lifelong learning experience in Trbovlje.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is youth learning?” tab_id=”1503474999225-ce00e8f9-b4dd”][vc_column_text]

Youth learning is understood as non-formal learning of young people about topics, not included in the school curriculum. It is about the development of the young person’s personality through experiential activities offered by the youth center or youth organization. Non-formal learning is complementary to the formal learning; therefore, the youth center tries to complement the activities of schools with our own activities. Thus, we provide young people with an additional spectrum of contents, which enables them to get to know themselves, develop and become active adults. To develop personal competences, in MCT young people are provided with mentoring, counseling, involvement in interest groups, trainings etc. For the development of the local community the Youth Center Trbovlje enables intergenerational cooperation, learning of intercultural dialogue and the development of volunteering.

Like the school, in the youth center, we also learn the learning effects that young people are conquering through the processes of youth learning. The key difference between classical evaluation and the measurement of learning effects is that we do not measure through the numbers in the latter, but raise awareness through the processes of individual and group reflections.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”What is an interest group?” tab_id=”1503475001394-848cdbf5-bb36″][vc_column_text]

Youth learning in youth work is a type of learning, where young people learn for life in a non-formal, often casual manner by realizing their own interests in the programs that we carry out in Youth Center Trbovlje. Interests group is just one of the forms of non-formal and informal learning of young people. Young people join interest groups according their own interests and on a voluntary basis and are have a chance to leave the group at any time. Interest groups are characterized by a high level of activity of young people with the supper of the mentor of the group not only in the planning, but also in implementation of the program.

Each interest group sets a goal that determines what do the participants want to achieve within the group, but the way how will they achieve it is up to the members of the group. Therefore, the mentor at the same time facilitates and occasionally directs the course of events. The important role of the mentor in the group is in evaluation. With active participation in interest groups young people learn and gain skills in different areas, therefore an important part of the whole process is also the reflection and recording of knowledge, gained in a non-formal and informal way.
